SimpleRemote
Privacy policy

Updated 31 October 2026 ยท Android package app.simpleremote

SimpleRemote is an independent Android TV-remote app from Urmia Works. It controls compatible televisions on your local network. No SimpleRemote account is required. Version 1.0.1 introduces Google AdMob banner advertising on the Remote, Timers and Devices tabs; version 1.0.0 contains no ads or advertising SDK. There are no in-app purchases. Contact [email protected] with privacy or support questions.

Local TV discovery and control

The app discovers TVs on your local network or connects to the private IPv4 address you enter. Device names, network addresses, model information, identifiers and available controls are used to identify and control your chosen TV. The app stores selected devices and settings on your phone. Remote commands go directly to your TV; our app does not send them to Urmia Works or a cloud-control service.

Pairing and security

Depending on the TV platform, pairing uses on-screen approval, a displayed PIN, a pre-shared key or an unauthenticated legacy network interface. Pairing credentials are encrypted with an Android Keystore-protected key. Android TV client private keys remain in Android Keystore. For supported TLS connections, you explicitly trust the first TV certificate during pairing; subsequent connections check the saved certificate. Certificate changes require pairing again.

Sony IP control, legacy Philips JointSPACE and legacy Panasonic VIERA use unencrypted HTTP. Discovery and Wake-on-LAN also use local network packets without transport encryption. Use these features only on a trusted private network. We do not claim that all app traffic is encrypted.

Optional keyboard and air mouse

When you choose Send in the phone keyboard, the text is transmitted to the selected TV's text-input interface. SimpleRemote does not save that text or send it to our servers. Your TV and the TV application receiving the text may process or retain it under their own privacy terms. Avoid sending sensitive information to an untrusted TV or app.

The optional experimental Samsung air mouse reads the phone's gyroscope while its movement switch is on and its panel is in the foreground. It converts motion to pointer commands sent directly to the TV. Motion samples are not saved or uploaded to Urmia Works. Closing the panel, pausing movement or leaving the app stops movement control. The app does not access the microphone, camera, contacts or precise location.

Sleep timers

On eligible platforms, timers are scheduled on your phone using Android's Alarms & reminders permission. The selected TV and timer status are saved locally. The app can send a single power-off command at the deadline. Reboot, force-stop, revoked permission or loss of the local network can prevent delivery. Missed commands are not replayed. Timers are not available on every platform, and connection loss does not prove that a TV switched off.

Advertising and privacy choices

From version 1.0.1, the Remote, Timers and Devices tabs can display a Google AdMob banner in a footer separate from controls. Banners are hidden during pairing, connecting, dialogs, text input and air-mouse use. There are no full-screen or button-triggered ads. TV functionality remains free and works without an ad loading. Advertising requires an internet connection to Google and its advertising partners; TV commands still go directly to your TV.

The Google Mobile Ads SDK automatically collects and shares information such as your IP address (which can indicate approximate location), device and advertising identifiers, app/ad interactions and diagnostic information. Google uses this information to provide and measure advertising, perform analytics, and prevent fraud and abuse. SimpleRemote requests non-personalized ads, but those ads can still use identifiers or local storage for measurement, frequency limits and fraud prevention. We do not pass your TV names, network addresses, pairing credentials, remote commands, keyboard text or motion samples to the advertising SDK. We do not operate a separate analytics or crash-reporting service.

Google's User Messaging Platform obtains privacy choices where required before ads are requested. When available in your region, open Devices โ†’ Ad privacy choices to revisit consent or opt out. Declining consent does not disable TV controls. Depending on your choices and applicable rules, limited ads or no ads may be shown. You can also manage your advertising identifier through Android's privacy settings. Advertising data is sent using encryption in transit; some local TV protocols remain unencrypted as described above.

Google and its partners handle advertising data and retention under their own policies. Clearing SimpleRemote's local storage does not delete data already held by Google or an advertising partner. See Google's Privacy Policy and How Google uses information from apps that use its services for details and controls. The consent message identifies applicable advertising partners.

Retention and deletion

Saved device settings, pairing credentials and timer records remain on the phone until removed. Use Devices โ†’ Forget to delete a TV's saved record and credentials and cancel its pending timers. Clear Android app storage or uninstall SimpleRemote to remove the app's local data and keys. Android cloud backup is disabled for app data. A TV may retain its own pairing approval; remove SimpleRemote from the TV's approved-device list if you also want to revoke it there.

Support and website

If you email support, we receive the information you choose to send and use it to respond. Do not send pairing secrets or sensitive text. Opening this policy or another website uses your browser and is separate from local TV operation. Our website is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes network requests to deliver and protect the site. See the Urmia Works website privacy policy for website practices.

Audience and changes

SimpleRemote is intended for adults managing their home entertainment devices and is not directed to children. We may update this policy when app behavior changes and will update the effective date above.
